Louisiana redistricting shifts Scotlandville into majority-white district

Redistricting in Louisiana has shifted the nearly all-Black community of Scotlandville into a majority-white congressional district. This change follows a U.S. Supreme Court decision that rendered a core part of the Voting Rights Act unconstitutional, leading to widespread map changes across the American South.

Democratic Representative Cleo Fields, a native of the area, has announced plans to leave Washington and return to the state legislature rather than seek reelection. Fields noted that the dramatic alteration of district boundaries leaves him with little chance of winning. Local residents expressed concern that the new maps diminish their political influence and direct line to federal power.
