Louisiana schedules Lake Bistineau drawdown on Aug 12 2026 to curb giant salvinia

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced that Lake Bistineau—spanning Webster, Bossier and Bienville parishes—will begin a water‑level drawdown on August 12, 2026. The operation aims to limit the spread of the invasive aquatic plant giant salvinia, a key component of the agency’s integrated management plan for aquatic vegetation and sport‑fish habitat.

Water will be released at four to six inches per day until the lake reaches a maximum of eight feet below its normal pool stage, leaving roughly 10,000 acres of water. The drawdown will end around November 30, after which the gates will close to allow the lake to refill for the waterfowl season and spring recreation. Public boat launches will remain open, though boaters are warned of submerged hazards and reduced lane clearance.
