Louisiana State Representative Michael Melerine involved in single-vehicle accident
Louisiana State Representative Michael Melerine was involved in a single-vehicle accident on Overton Brooks Road in Shreveport on July 22. Melerine’s SUV became stuck in a ditch, leading to an encounter with Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office deputies.
During the investigation, deputies reported that Melerine appeared incoherent and struggled to explain the cause of the crash. He reportedly claimed he was not driving and stated there were five other occupants in the vehicle, though no one else was present. Melerine was handcuffed for suspicion of driving under the influence after failing to comply with commands to place his hands behind his back.
Melerine’s wife, Stacey Melerine, suggested to deputies that he might have been experiencing medical issues that caused erratic behavior. Attorney Eric Johnson stated that Melerine was not charged with a crime, noting that no blood was drawn at the hospital and he was released after being medically cleared.
