Louisiana Updates School Bus Stop Laws for Drivers

Louisiana has revised its traffic rules governing when motorists must stop for school buses. Under the new regulations, drivers on two‑lane roads must halt when a school bus displays flashing lights and extended stop signs, regardless of which side of the road the driver is traveling on. Exceptions apply on divided roadways that include a ditch, grassy median or elevated concrete barrier, where stopping is not required.

The state emphasizes safety, noting that many school buses now carry on‑board cameras to record violations. Local attorney Richard Kennedy highlighted that school buses remain the safest mode of transport for children, but stresses that failure to obey stop rules can lead to serious injuries in the event of a crash. The changes aim to reinforce driver awareness and protect students during pick‑up and drop‑off periods.
