Louisiana wildlife officials advise against intervening with fawns

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) advises the public against attempting to foster or keep young fawns found in nature. Officials emphasize that individuals should not assume a fawn requires intervention to survive.

Key biological facts regarding deer include that while most healthy adult does give birth to twins, single births are more common in younger does. Fawns typically begin eating solid food at three to four weeks of age and are generally weaned by eight to ten weeks.

Regarding the desire to keep deer as pets, authorities state it is against Louisiana law. Experts note that while deer can be tamed, they are not domesticated, and the stress of enforced captivity can lead to death.
