Louisville health officials warn of active mosquitoes and ticks in fall

Public health officials in Louisville are warning residents that mosquitoes and ticks remain active during the fall season. Despite cooler autumn temperatures, recent warm weather in Kentucky has maintained conditions conducive to insect activity.

Connie Mendel, director and chief health strategist at the Louisville Metro Department of Public Health and Wellness, noted that mosquitoes typically remain active until the first significant frost or until temperatures consistently drop below 50 degrees. While overall mosquito populations are decreasing, those carrying the West Nile virus are still present and active.

Additionally, officials warned that fallen leaves and increased ground cover provide hiding places for ticks. Residents engaging in outdoor activities such as hiking or camping are advised to check themselves, children, and pets for ticks and use EPA-registered insect repellents to reduce risks.
