Louisville Teen Da’Jon Hayes-Burr Killed After Prior Heroic Intervention
Fifteen‑year‑old Da’Jon Anthony Hayes‑Burr was fatally shot on Saturday night in the Shawnee neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky. Police say a 14‑year‑old suspect was arrested on a murder charge, but the shooter’s identity and motive have not been disclosed.
Three months earlier, Hayes‑Burr had been hailed as a local hero when he and other teens intervened to protect 12‑year‑old Kristyn Staisel from a 45‑year‑old man, Vasilis Sakellardis, who made sexual comments at the Thunder Over Louisville festival. During the confrontation Sakellardis allegedly produced a knife and stabbed Hayes‑Burr in the stomach. After surviving the attack, Hayes‑Burr received a letter of recognition and a challenge coin from Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.
Following his death, the community and the governor expressed condolences, describing Hayes‑Burr as a brave and altruistic young man whose loss has devastated his family and the city.
