Louvre Museum faces potential closure without major renovation

Christophe Leribault, director of the Louvre Museum, has warned that the institution may be forced to close to the public if a major renovation and modernization project is not approved. The warning comes nearly one year after a high-profile robbery on October 19, 2025, in which thieves stole eight French Crown jewels valued at over $100 million.

Leribault is advocating for the ‘Louvre Nouvelle Renaissance’ plan, a comprehensive overhaul proposed by President Emmanuel Macron. The project, estimated to cost approximately one billion euros, aims to address aging infrastructure, overcrowding, and critical security vulnerabilities. While a security-specific master plan worth 83 million euros is currently underway—including the installation of new cameras and the creation of a security chief position—Leribault maintains that these are insufficient without systemic structural improvements.

The museum faces additional challenges, including a projected budget reduction of three million euros by 2027 and deteriorating facilities such as outdated plumbing and climate control systems. To fund the massive renovation, the museum is seeking private patrons in regions including Japan, Hong Kong, and the United States, while also considering moderate increases in entrance fees.
