Louyse Moillon’s Still Lifes Featured at Musée des Augustins, Toulouse

Louyse Moillon (c. 1610‑1686), a Dutch‑born Protestant painter, is now highlighted in a new exhibition at the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse. The museum, which occupies the historic former Augustinian convent, displays four of Moillon’s recognized still‑life paintings out of a total of 69 works in its collection, the rest having been re‑attributed or rejected over time.

The show emphasizes Moillon’s role in 17th‑century French still‑life painting, a genre once considered minor. It draws parallels with Caravaggio’s fruit baskets and notes the distinct colour palettes used by Protestant versus Catholic artists of the period. The museum’s recent renovations have created a modern space for the public to explore this overlooked facet of French art history.
