Love Hypothesis director discusses Star Wars connections

Director Claire Scanlon has detailed the Star Wars-related references within the romantic comedy Love Hypothesis, which premiered on Amazon Prime on September 23. While the film appears to be a standard romantic comedy featuring Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman, its origins are rooted in Star Wars fan fiction.

The source novel by Ali Hazelwood was originally a fan fiction story titled ‘Head Over Feet,’ centered on the characters Kylo Ren and Rey from the Star Wars sequel trilogy. Although the most explicit references were removed for the New York Times bestselling novel, Scanlon notes that Jedi-adjacent elements remain in the film.

One notable connection is the casting of Tom Bateman, whose character Adam Carlsen is inspired by Kylo Ren. Bateman is married to Daisy Ridley, the actress who played Rey, though Scanlon stated this did not influence his casting decision.
