Lovro Majer completes €6 million-plus move to AEK Athens, solidarity funds benefit four Croatian clubs

Croatian midfielder Lovro Majer, 28, is set to sign a four‑year contract with Greek side AEK Athens after the clubs reached an agreement on a transfer fee exceeding €6 million, including bonuses. The deal makes Majer the most expensive signing in AEK’s history, overtaking Orbelín Pineda’s €6.5 million record. Majer will travel to the Netherlands for a medical examination before completing the move in Athens, where he is reported to earn a net €2 million per year.

Under FIFA’s solidarity mechanism, a portion of the fee will be distributed to four Croatian clubs that contributed to his development: Dinamo Zagreb will receive about €105 000, Lokomotiva approximately €150 000, Trnje €15 000 and Dubrava €30 000. Majer’s previous career path includes spells at Lokomotiva, Dinamo Zagreb, a €12 million transfer to Rennes and a €25 million move to Wolfsburg, where he logged 75 appearances, 10 goals and 11 assists. He was not selected for Croatia’s squad for the upcoming World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
