Low-cost airlines enforce strict cabin baggage rules in Spain
Travelers using low-cost airlines in Spain face varying cabin baggage restrictions that can significantly increase flight costs. While traditional carriers like Iberia allow standard 55x40x20 cm trolleys, low-cost carriers such as Ryanair, Vueling, and Wizz Air have stricter limits, often requiring smaller bags measuring 40x30x20 cm.
Failure to comply with these specific dimensions can result in surcharges ranging from 7 to 43 euros per trip. This issue follows a legal dispute where the Spanish government imposed 179 million euros in fines against several airlines, including Ryanair, Vueling, easyJet, Norwegian, and Volotea, for charging fees on reasonable cabin bag sizes. However, the European Commission has since supported the airlines and opened an infringement procedure against Spain, leaving the regulatory landscape currently dictated by individual airline policies.
