Low emission zone regulations implemented in Brussels and France

Low emission zones (LEZ) in Brussels and France are implementing different regulatory frameworks for vehicle access based on emission standards.

In Brussels, foreign-registered vehicles must choose between a free registration for those meeting specific Euro standards (Euro 6 for diesel, Euro 3 or higher for petrol) or a 35-euro daily pass for non-compliant vehicles. Failure to comply can result in fines of approximately 150 euros, while non-compliant drivers using the daily pass incorrectly may face fines up to 350 euros.

In France, the Climate and Resilience Law mandates low emission zones (ZFE) in 43 urban areas with populations over 150,000. While many areas are currently designated as territories of vigilance with minimal restrictions, major cities like Paris and Lyon enforce strict rules. In these zones, vehicles with a Crit’Air rating of 3 or higher are subject to fines. The French Constitutional Council has upheld the legality of these zones, preventing local authorities from abolishing the requirements.
