Low-fat vegan diet aids weight loss without food restriction

A 16-week clinical trial conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine suggests that a low-fat vegan diet can facilitate weight loss without the need for calorie counting or reducing food volume.

The study, led by Hana Kahleova, involved overweight participants divided into two groups. One group maintained their usual diet, while the second adopted a diet primarily composed of fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes, eliminating meat, dairy, and eggs.

Researchers found that the vegan group substantially reduced their caloric intake without eating less food than usual. This is attributed to lower energy density; plant-based foods are often higher in water and fiber, allowing for larger volumes of food to be consumed with fewer calories.
