Low-Protein Diet Linked to Better Metabolism for Sedentary Adults
A systematic review of more than 350 studies concluded that reduced protein intake can improve metabolic health, increase the hormone FGF21 and may slow age‑related decline. The analysis suggests lower protein consumption lowers the risk of diabetes, certain cancers and cardiovascular disease, especially among adults with low physical activity levels.
The authors note that active individuals still require adequate protein for muscle maintenance, and they recommend that dietary guidelines be differentiated by activity level. The review, led by researchers at the University of Wisconsin‑Madison, contrasts its findings with current U.S. Dietary Guidelines that advise 1.2–1.6 g of protein per kilogram of body weight.
