Rhine low water spikes freight costs and fuels supply worries in Germany

In late July and early August 2026 water levels on Germany’s Rhine fell to historic lows. At Cologne the gauge recorded 68 cm, a centimetre below the previous record of 2018, while at Kaub the navigable depth was about 25 cm, matching the 2018 low. The shallow water forced barges to carry only 10‑20 % of their normal cargo, pushing freight rates on the Rotterdam–Karlsruhe lane to €145‑150 per tonne and inflating overall transport costs by up to 250 % of pre‑drought prices. The reduced capacity also strained fuel logistics; with the Kaub gauge at 29 cm many tankers can only load a fraction of their usual volume, prompting warnings of regional fuel shortages. Industry groups and the federal waterway authority warned that the situation threatens the supply of raw materials to chemicals, steel and mineral‑oil sectors. In response, Maritime Coordinator Christoph Ploß called for a rapid expansion of the Rhine’s waterway infrastructure, and NRW Transport Minister Oliver Krischer demanded federal funding to complete the channel upgrade between Duisburg and Cologne. The combined impact is raising production costs for German manufacturers and could be passed on to consumers.
