Danube water levels trigger energy production disruptions in Europe

Severe drought and record-low water levels in the Danube are causing significant energy production disruptions across Central and Eastern Europe. In Romania, the Cernavoda nuclear power plant has faced the shutdown of its second reactor due to insufficient water for cooling. This has placed the national power grid under stress, though electricity consumption has remained lower than initially projected following the outage.

The Danube's flow at the Baziaș entry point is currently approximately 1,400 m³/s, which is only about 36% of the multi-annual August average. Hydrologists predict these low levels will persist or potentially decrease further in the coming days.

Regional energy impacts are widespread. In Slovakia, the Bősi hydroelectric plant is seeing a drastic reduction in output, with capacity expected to drop to 40 MW. In Austria, Verbund's hydroelectric production has fallen by roughly one-third, a deficit being partially offset by solar energy. In Hungary, the Paks nuclear power plant has also had to operate at reduced capacity due to critical water levels and high water temperatures in the river.
