Low testosterone and its impact on men's health and mood
Low testosterone, clinically referred to as hypogonadism, can lead to various physical and mental health symptoms in men. Unlike the abrupt hormonal shifts seen in female menopause, men typically experience a gradual decline in testosterone levels, often starting around age 40 with an average decrease of one to two percent per year.
Common symptoms include fatigue, low energy, decreased libido, loss of muscle mass, and increased body fat. Notably, low testosterone can also manifest as mental health challenges, such as irritability, brain fog, low motivation, and depressed mood, which often overlap with symptoms of clinical depression.
Factors such as obesity, lack of exercise, smoking, alcohol consumption, and chronic stress can accelerate this decline. While low levels are not always pathological, lifestyle interventions—including regular strength training, balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and moderate alcohol consumption—can positively influence hormone levels and overall well-being.
