Low-tox cleaning routines using simple household ingredients

Adopting a low-tox cleaning routine can involve using a limited number of simple ingredients to reduce exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and minimize packaging waste. Key ingredients include white distilled vinegar, baking soda, castile soap, hydrogen peroxide, and washing soda.

White vinegar serves as a mild acid effective for removing mineral deposits, soap residue, and grease. In laundry, vinegar is being used as a popular alternative to conventional fabric softeners. Specifically, using apple cider vinegar can help dissolve detergent residue and preserve the appearance of dark clothing without leaving the film that some softeners deposit on fibers.

While these alternatives can simplify routines, experts note that certain tasks still require specialized commercial products, such as disinfectants or mold remediators. Safety remains critical; the CDC warns against mixing bleach with other cleaners to avoid dangerous vapors, and users should always ensure proper ventilation.
