North Sea low water disrupts German island ferry services

Strong easterly winds in the North Sea have caused low water levels, disrupting ferry services to several East Frisian Islands in northwest Germany during the autumn holiday period.

Major disruptions have been reported for travel to islands including Juist, Wangerooge, Spiekeroog, and Spiekeroog. Specifically, ferry connections between Norddeich and Juist have faced cancellations, and trips between Wangerooge and Harlesiel have been affected. While some services, such as those to Norderney, remain on schedule, others have seen significant changes to departure times or total cancellations.

The phenomenon is caused by persistent east winds pushing water away from the coast, making navigation through the Wadden Sea difficult or impossible for certain vessels. Beyond passenger travel, the low water levels are also impacting freight transport, with scheduled cargo shipments facing delays or cancellations.
