Rhine river reaches record low levels amid severe German drought
Germany is experiencing a historic drought in 2026, causing extreme low water levels in major rivers like the Rhine, Elbe, and Danube. The Rhine has reached record lows, with the gauge at Kaub dropping to just 9 centimeters, a level lower than the severe drought of 2018. This has severely impacted logistics, as cargo ships can only carry a fraction of their usual load, forcing a shift toward road and rail transport.
The environmental consequences are severe. In smaller tributaries of the Rhine, Moselle, Lahn, and Nahe, experts report local ecological collapses and fish die-offs due to rising temperatures, oxygen depletion, and concentrated pollutants. Additionally, the receding waters have exposed significant amounts of waste and unexploded World War II munitions along the riverbanks.
While some rivers like the Saar and Moselle remain navigable due to dam regulation, the Rhine remains a critical bottleneck. Long-standing infrastructure projects aimed at deepening the fairway at Kaub have been delayed for decades, with completion not expected until 2033. Meteorologists warn that significant relief from the drought is not expected in the near future.
