Lower Austria advances LED lighting transition in government buildings

Lower Austria is advancing a province-wide transition to LED lighting to improve energy efficiency and sustainability. The modernization of the government district in St. Pölten is on schedule and expected to be completed by autumn 2026. This phase includes the exchange of approximately 29,000 lights across offices, hallways, and garages.

The initiative utilizes a combination of LED technology, motion sensors, and daylight regulation to maximize savings. According to Christoph Reiter, head of the Building and Property Management Department, this integrated approach is expected to generate annual savings of approximately 432,000 euros.

Beyond the St. Pölten government district, the transition is being rolled out to district authorities. Locations such as Gmünd, Horn, Waidhofen an der Thaya, Zwettl, and Mödling have already completed the switch, while others are currently in progress. The goal is to complete the conversion for all district authorities by 2028. Plans for upgrading state school buildings are also under assessment.
