Lower Austria files first report over school headscarf ban violation

The first legal report has been filed in Lower Austria regarding the violation of the ban on wearing headscarves by female students under the age of 14. The case involves a 13-year-old girl in the Neunkirchen region. Following mandatory discussions between the school, the student, and her guardians, the matter was referred to the district authority for further proceedings.

Under current regulations, families facing continued violations of the ban may be subject to fines ranging from 150 to 800 euros. Authorities noted that several other cases are currently in various stages of the prescribed legal process.

Lower Austria Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner stated that the measure aims to protect young girls and ensure they grow up under equal conditions. She has also advocated for stricter penalties at the federal level, suggesting a maximum fine of 2,500 euros. Education Minister Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister emphasized that schools have received clear instructions to document violations and initiate the required steps without delay.
