Amstetten pig farm closed after discovery of 400 dead animals
An animal welfare scandal has emerged in the Amstetten district of Lower Austria after authorities discovered approximately 400 dead pigs at a pig farming facility. The discovery was made following complaints from local residents regarding a strong, decomposing odor.
Investigations revealed that the farm is missing approximately 1,000 pigs according to official records, leading authorities to investigate the possibility of cannibalism among the animals. The facility has been closed, and a report has been filed against the owner on suspicion of animal cruelty. Authorities are also considering a ban on the owner's ability to keep livestock.
This incident follows a similar event at the same farm last year, where 150 pigs died due to a ventilation failure. Despite regular inspections by provincial authorities, the recurring issues have prompted animal welfare organizations to call for fundamental reforms in the Austrian pig farming control systems. The farm was not part of the voluntary AMA quality seal program, meaning it was not subject to the additional independent audits required by that certification.
