Lower Austria plans 300 water projects following historic drought

Lower Austria is planning approximately 300 new water infrastructure projects to secure long-term supply following the driest twelve-month period in the region's 176-year recorded history. While the current drinking water supply remains stable for over 90 percent of the population, recent data shows significant environmental stress.

Regional precipitation has dropped by 30 to 60 percent compared to long-term averages, and temperatures have risen by an average of 3.4 degrees Celsius. This has resulted in 91 percent of groundwater monitoring stations recording low or very low levels, and 88 percent of surface water levels being in the very low range. The Danube has also experienced historic lows, impacting shipping.

To address these challenges, the provincial government is expanding its infrastructure. Currently, 200 projects—including new wells, pipelines, and reservoirs—are under construction. The planned 300 additional projects over the next two years will complement existing efforts, which include the development of drinking and rainwater management plans and river renaturation projects.
