In Lower Austria, police issued 83,560 citations for heavy‑traffic violations in the previous year, a sharp increase after a new control software was introduced in 2024. The system allows more targeted pre‑selection and finer detection of infractions, though individual checks may take longer.

Around half of the citations involved breaches of driving‑ and rest‑time regulations. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner said the safety of people is the focus of all measures, linking the enforcement to efforts against smuggling crime. No tractor‑trailer arrests have been recorded on the A1 west highway since the start of the year, and border checks at the Burgenland‑Hungary frontier reported six illegal crossings last week.
