Austria education: Record summer school enrollment and school closures

Austria is experiencing significant shifts in its educational landscape. In Lower Austria, a summer school program has launched with record participation, with approximately 10,500 to 11,000 students enrolled across 208 locations. This year, participation is mandatory for roughly 1,900 students in German language support classes. The program aims to bridge learning gaps in subjects like German, mathematics, and English.

Simultaneously, several small schools are facing closures or mergers across the country. In Styria and Upper Austria, seven locations are being closed, merged, or temporarily suspended for the 2026/27 school year. In Salzburg, the Neumarkt am Wallersee polytechnic school is also being decommissioned, though it may be reactivated in the future. To mitigate these closures, some regions are increasing the use of school clusters to better utilize resources.
