Lower Saxony advances peatland renaturation and specialist training
Efforts to restore peatlands and moors are advancing in Lower Saxony, Germany, as part of broader climate protection and biodiversity initiatives. In the Gifhorn district, representatives from the Gifhorn district, Niedersächsische Landesforsten, and Vermilion Energy Germany recently inaugurated an information board at the Külsenmoor to highlight ongoing renaturation progress and the start of a second construction phase aimed at stabilizing the water balance.
Because intact peatlands act as vital carbon sinks, the state is also addressing the need for specialized labor. Lower Saxony, which contains one-third of Germany’s peatlands, is participating in a professional training offensive to qualify moor specialists. These experts are required to manage maintenance tasks, such as removing woody plants that deplete water levels, to ensure that drained or industrially harvested areas can successfully return to a natural, CO2-storing state.
