Lower Saxony data protection commissioner criticizes police law expansion

The Lower Saxony State Commissioner for Data Protection has released a 2025 activity report addressing the proposed expansion of the state police law (NPOG2). The report contains criticisms regarding several new powers granted to law enforcement agencies.

Proposed measures include the use of intelligent video surveillance, real-time biometric remote identification, and retrospective biometric comparisons using publicly available internet data. Additionally, the draft law includes provisions for automated data analysis, the use of drones, and an expansion of the use of leg irons in cases of domestic violence.
