CDU wins municipal elections in Lower Saxony

The CDU has emerged as the strongest political force in the Lower Saxony municipal elections, securing approximately 27.2 percent of the vote. The SPD followed in second place with 24.6 percent, while the AfD saw a significant surge, reaching 15.9 percent, a substantial increase compared to the 2021 elections.

The election results indicate a shifting political landscape in western Germany. While the CDU maintained its leadership, the AfD's growth suggests its influence is expanding beyond eastern states. The Greens received 14.1 percent, and the Left party saw gains, reaching 6 percent.

In specific local races, Dennis Weilmann (CDU) won the Wolfsburg mayoral election with 50.1 percent of the vote. In Hannover, Belit Onay (Greens) is leading the mayoral race and will face Axel von der Ohe (SPD) in a runoff election scheduled for September 27. Voter turnout for the regional elections was reported at 64.6 percent.
