Lower Saxony implements school reforms amid teacher shortages

As the new school year begins in Lower Saxony, Germany, the region is implementing several educational reforms and support measures. The 'Sichere Basis' program is entering its final expansion phase, providing primary schools with three additional weekly hours focused on reading, writing, arithmetic, and social skills. The state is also increasing support for German and mathematics in secondary schools.

To assist families, the Region Hannover is highlighting its 'Education and Participation Package.' This initiative provides eligible families with up to 180 euros per child annually to cover costs for extracurricular activities such as sports clubs, music lessons, and cultural outings. The program also covers school lunches, transport, and learning materials.

However, the Association of Lower Saxony Teachers (VNL) has raised concerns regarding the implementation of these new mandates. The association warns that schools are being burdened with new tasks while facing significant staffing shortages. At the start of the school year, approximately 79 percent of roughly 2,000 advertised teaching positions had been filled, with non-gymnasial schools being particularly affected by the vacancies.
