Lower Saxony students engage in forest-based environmental education

Students in Lower Saxony, Germany, are participating in various educational programs designed to foster environmental awareness and sustainability through direct forest engagement.

At the Gymnasium Anna-Sophianeum in Schöningen, 79 students from grades 6 to 11 attended the first “Schulwald Visionen Niedersachsen” networking meeting. Organized with the Stiftung Zukunft Wald, the event aimed to transform school forests into active learning sites where students can discuss climate, biodiversity, and sustainable action. The initiative focuses on empowering youth to recognize ecological connections and develop collaborative solutions for the future.

In the Rotenburg (Wümme) region, 375 fourth-grade students from ten primary schools participated in the “Waldjugendspiele” (Forest Youth Games) organized by the Niedersächsisches Forstamt Rotenburg. Over two days, children navigated 18 stations focused on local tree species, forestry work, wildlife habitats, and forest fire prevention. The program emphasized experiential learning, teaching students about the forest's role in providing timber, protecting soil and water, and serving as a recreational space.
