LS Electric and KEPCO partner on grid-forming technology

LS Electric and Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop next-generation power electronics technology for distribution network stabilization.

The partnership focuses on developing grid-forming technology, which allows inverter-based distributed energy sources—such as solar, wind, and energy storage systems—to autonomously form voltage and frequency. This differs from traditional grid-following methods by actively mitigating distribution network volatility. As this technology is currently in the early stages of global commercialization, the two entities plan to pursue joint business development for export following domestic verification.

Additionally, the collaboration will include research into smart transformers capable of real-time monitoring and control of the power grid, as well as black-start-based microgrid technology designed to quickly restart systems using emergency power during large-scale outages.
