LS Electric deploys Spot robots at Busan plant for smart manufacturing
LS Electric has officially deployed two Spot quadruped robots from Boston Dynamics at its Busan manufacturing plant to advance its smart factory capabilities. Following a two-month trial period conducted in collaboration with system integrator Hyundai AutoEver, the robots are now being used to monitor production processes and utility equipment.
The Busan facility, which specializes in ultra-high voltage transformers, has seen increased production demands due to growing investments in AI data centers and power grids. The robots are tasked with real-time facility inspections and predictive maintenance, specifically focusing on vacuum drying furnace (VPD) processes. Using thermal imaging and AI-based vision inspection (AIVI) technology, the robots monitor sealing status, heat leakage, and environmental data such as temperature and humidity in areas that may be difficult for traditional sensors to reach.
Additionally, the robots will patrol hazardous areas and monitor utility equipment—including motors, pumps, and generators—to detect abnormal noise, vibration, or heat. LS Electric plans to use the collected data to build AI analysis models, with the long-term goal of expanding robot-based patrol systems and digital manufacturing platforms across all its domestic and international production sites.
