LSU Athletics projects $26 million budget deficit
The LSU athletic department is projecting a $26 million budget deficit for the 2026-27 fiscal year, according to baseline financial projections presented by University President Wade Rousse to the Board of Regents. This follows a confirmed $44 million deficit during the 2025-26 fiscal cycle. Over the last six years, the department has overspent its budget by a total of $177.5 million.
Several factors contribute to the financial strain, including Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) compensation, where LSU opted to spend the maximum allowed $21.5 million to remain competitive. Additionally, leadership changes have impacted the budget; the university owes a $54 million buyout to former Head Coach Brian Kelly, while current Head Coach Lane Kiffin was recently awarded a seven-year, $91 million contract.
To address the shortfall, university leadership is developing a new revenue model involving private equity investments tied to future media rights. Officials are awaiting a full brand valuation before finalizing details, though the administration maintains it will retain total brand control. The objective is to generate immediate cash for athletic operations and eventually support university academics.
