LSU coach Will Wade to follow SEC rules on RJ Luis eligibility

LSU men’s basketball coach Will Wade announced that the university will not challenge Southeastern Conference (SEC) protocols regarding the eligibility of RJ Luis. Luis, a former Big East Player of the Year, is ineligible to play for the Tigers due to a conference rule that prohibits rostering players who have signed professional contracts with NBA, NFL, or WNBA franchises.

Despite Wade’s intention to comply with conference guidelines, the SEC has filed a legal argument in federal court to prevent the dismissal of its lawsuit against LSU officials. SEC attorneys contend that LSU has not provided a sworn declaration confirming it will adhere to professionalism rules. The league argues that LSU is attempting to avoid potential expulsion from the conference while simultaneously leaving the possibility open to defy these regulations.

The dispute stems from new SEC regulations that penalize programs for adding athletes who previously signed professional contracts. Penalties can include significant fines and coaching suspensions. The legal battle follows a period of tension regarding roster management for both basketball and football programs at the university.
