László Toroczkai suspended from Hungarian Parliament

Ágnes Forsthoffer, Speaker of the Hungarian Parliament, has suspended László Toroczkai, leader of the Mi Hazánk movement, from participating in parliamentary work for the remainder of the week. The decision follows a heated exchange during a Monday session where Toroczkai referred to Péter Magyar as a ‘cowardly, disgusting worm’ after Magyar accused Toroczkai of lobbying ministries for his own companies.

Forsthoffer justified the sanction by stating that Toroczkai used ‘unacceptable language’ that violated fundamental rights guaranteed by the Basic Law and insulted human dignity. While the suspension prevents Toroczkai from participating in debates and parliamentary work, he remains permitted to participate in voting.

The incident has sparked significant political tension. Opposition members have criticized the move as a ‘double standard,’ alleging that similar or more severe insults from other politicians have gone unpunished. Conversely, Fidesz representatives suggested the Speaker’s leadership style has shifted toward restricting opposition speech.

Additionally, Toroczkai reported receiving a death threat via his parliamentary email, warning of fatal consequences if he continued to insult the Prime Minister, and indicated he may file a police report.
