Luča satellite wins prestigious AIAA award in the US

Montenegro’s first satellite, Luča, has won the prestigious ‘Rookie of the Year 2026’ award presented by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). The announcement was made by Montenegro Space Research during the SmallSat Conference held in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Luča, a compact 1U CubeSat, secured the victory following a process of nomination, professional selection, and public voting. The mission competed against significantly larger and more resource-intensive projects, including Bahrain’s Al-Munther 3U CubeSat and Australia’s 100-kilogram ElaraSat MMS-1 platform developed by Gilmour Space Technologies.

Representatives from Montenegro Space Research described the achievement as a historic milestone for the nation’s domestic space sector, noting that the small satellite’s success demonstrates that significant technological impact can be achieved despite limited budgets and resources.
