Luanda Film Festival screens Werner Herzog documentary on Angola elephants

The 8th edition of the Luanda International Film Festival (FIC Luanda) featured the screening of the documentary “Ghost Elephants” at the Cinemateca Nacional in Luanda. Directed by Werner Herzog, the film follows a National Geographic expedition led by biologist Steve Boyes through the remote eastern regions of Angola.

The expedition explores the Luengue-Luiana and Mavinga conservation complexes in Cuando Province to locate a mysterious herd of elephants. The documentary combines scientific investigation with local community knowledge to highlight the country's biodiversity and the necessity of habitat preservation.

The screening was part of the “Visit Angola” showcase, which features films focused on the nation's landscapes, heritage, and natural ecosystems. The festival, which returned after an eleven-year hiatus, concludes on November 2.
