Lublin launches bid for European City of Sport 2028

The city of Lublin has submitted its application to the European Capitals and Cities of Sport federation, starting the formal process to become the European City of Sport for 2028. The bid emphasizes sport’s role in social and economic development, citing the city’s strong club presence, international competition hosting experience, and existing facilities such as the Motor Arena, Aqua Lublin and extensive cycling routes. Winning the title would give Lublin access to the ACES Europe network and potential EU funding for new programmes and infrastructure.

In nearby Lubliniec, mayor Edward Maniura announced a renewed effort to build a new indoor swimming pool, targeting a 2029 opening. The project, estimated at 30‑35 million zł, seeks up to 15 million zł in sport‑minister funding, with a tender possibly issued in 2027. The mayor highlighted past funding setbacks and reduced municipal revenues, but expressed confidence that the revised documentation could secure the needed support.

Both initiatives reflect a broader push by Polish municipalities to enhance sport facilities and attract European‑level recognition and investment.
