Lublin reopens Cold War-era air raid shelter
The city of Lublin, Poland, has reactivated a Cold War-era air raid shelter in response to intensifying Russian attacks on neighboring Ukraine and increased security concerns near the Polish border. The modernized facility, located beneath the headquarters of the municipal transport company MPK Lublin, was originally constructed in the mid-1980s.
The shelter is designed to accommodate 200 people for up to 72 hours. It features autonomous systems for air filtration, water supply, and electricity, allowing it to function independently of external municipal networks. In a symbolic shift reflecting current geopolitical tensions, the shelter’s emergency exit has been reoriented to face west rather than east.
This reactivation is part of a broader national effort to strengthen Poland’s civil defense. Government data indicates that Poland currently maintains approximately 2,000 professional shelters capable of protecting 300,000 people. Additionally, over 86,000 secondary locations, such as basements, underground garages, and subway stations, provide lower-level protection for an estimated 23 million citizens.
