Lublin surgeons complete rare endoscopic spine operation for achondroplasia
A team of neuro‑surgeons from the Wojewódzki Szpital Specjalistyczny im. Stefana Kardynała Wyszyńskiego in Lublin performed a minimally invasive mono‑portal endoscopic surgery on a 31‑year‑old man, Łukasz, who suffers from achondroplasia. The condition causes shortened vertebral bodies and spinal canal narrowing, which had led to severe pain, limb numbness, muscle weakness and loss of independent walking earlier this year.
The endoscopic technique allowed the surgeons to relieve the stenosis without destabilising the spine. Łukasz was spayed on the day of the operation and discharged the following day. Such procedures are exceptionally rare; worldwide medical literature lists only a handful of similar cases involving patients with achondroplasia.
Achondroplasia affects roughly 250,000 people globally and about 220 individuals in Poland. Conventional open spine surgery for these patients carries a high risk of postoperative instability that often necessitates extensive spinal stabilization, whereas the endoscopic approach avoided those complications and enabled a rapid recovery.
