Europe observes solar eclipse and Perseid meteor peak

Europe experienced a major dual astronomical event on August 12, 2026, featuring a solar eclipse and the peak of the Perseid meteor shower.

A solar eclipse was visible across much of the continent. While a total solar eclipse was observed in Iceland and northern Spain, a partial eclipse was seen in Poland, the Czech Republic, and parts of North Africa. In Iceland, the event drew tens of thousands of tourists, with many observing from land, sea, and air. In Spain, the phenomenon was widely observed, including a viral moment featuring Olympic skateboarder Daniel León.

Following the eclipse, the Perseid meteor shower reached its maximum activity. Astronomers noted that ideal viewing conditions were provided by a new moon, which minimized light interference. Observers in Poland and the Czech Republic were advised to seek dark locations away from urban light pollution to witness the meteors, which can reach rates of up to 80 to 100 per hour under clear skies.
