Lubmin beach suffers significant erosion due to wind and ice

The beach in Lubmin has undergone significant changes, with an estimated 30 meters of sand having washed away. Local officials attribute the erosion to a combination of ice, wind, and severe weather conditions.

Mayor Axel Vogt noted that persistent winds of force five and six, following a prolonged period of ice this past winter, have caused substantial sand displacement. Because the coastline runs from southwest to northeast, the wind and currents have created bays that accelerate further erosion. While some material has deposited as sandbanks offshore, this has also created turbulence that contributes to the ongoing loss of the shoreline.

Authorities from the State Office for Agriculture and the Environment Vorpommern (StALU VP) are currently reviewing the condition of the coastline to determine if repairs or further coastal protection measures are necessary.
