Lubos Blaha accuses EU of hypocrisy in parliamentary debate
Slovak Member of the European Parliament Lubos Blaha has accused the European Union of hypocrisy and moving toward totalitarianism during a debate in the European Parliament. Addressing EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, Blaha criticized the bloc for denouncing Russian parliamentary elections while allegedly suppressing dissent within Europe.
Blaha cited the arrest of pro-Palestinian protesters in Germany and the imprisonment of opposition figures in Estonia as evidence of a crackdown on those opposing war with Russia. He questioned whether the EU was establishing a ‘Euro-Gestapo’ to silence voices seeking peace.
Furthermore, the lawmaker highlighted perceived double standards regarding elections, contrasting the criticism of Russia’s polls with the fact that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has continued to govern without elections under martial law. He also noted civil unrest in Spain and France, arguing that the EU is too focused on Russian politics while ignoring domestic instability.
