Lucía Galán defines adolescent rebellion as a search for identity
Pediatrician and author Lucía Galán argues that adolescent behavior often perceived as rebellion is actually a natural process of identity formation. In her upcoming book, 'Adolescencia' (Planeta, 2026), Galán explains that teenagers construct their ideological, sexual, physical, and social identities through a process of trial and error.
Galán notes that the adolescent brain undergoes significant transformations from the onset of puberty, which can occur between ages 10 and 12, until age 25. A particularly intense period of neurological change occurs between the ages of 13 and 16. This biological development explains why adolescents frequently test boundaries and question established norms. Galán also warns that overprotecting children can hinder their ability to face the challenges of adult life.
