Luca Guercilena outlines vision to revamp Giro d'Italia

Luca Guercilena, the new Head of Cycling at RCS Sport, has outlined a strategic vision to revamp the Giro d'Italia. After spending 16 years managing the Lidl-Trek team, Guercilena aims to make the race more international, commercially attractive, and balanced for various rider profiles.

A key component of his plan is to increase the prominence of time trials. He intends to create more balanced routes that offer opportunities for specialists against the clock, ensuring that sprinters, climbers, and time trialists all have a meaningful role in the race.

Guercilena also expressed a desire to move the Giro d'Italia later in the racing calendar to avoid poor weather and potentially align with La Festa della Repubblica. Rather than actively recruiting star names, he believes the organization should focus on creating a high-quality, well-structured race that naturally attracts the world's best cyclists.
