Luca Palamara Calls for Politics‑Free Judiciary and Lottery‑Based CSM Selection in Italy

Former magistrate and ANM secretary Luca Palamara urged that politics be removed from Italy’s justice system. Referring to the recent referendum in which the "no" side prevailed, he suggested that the election of members to the Consiglio Superiore della Magistratura (CSM) be carried out by sortition among university law professors and lawyers with at least 15 years of practice, rather than through political appointment. Palamara presented the proposal at the Ponza d'autore event, saying it would respect the referendum outcome and prevent political control of the judiciary. The next CSM elections are scheduled for 25‑26 October, with magistrates continuing to co‑opt members under the new selection method.
