Lucas Paquetá ruled out of World Cup round of 16 with thigh injury

Brazilian midfielder Lucas Paquetá suffered a muscle injury to the back of his left thigh during Brazil's 2‑1 victory over Japan in the World Cup round of 32. Imaging on 30 June confirmed the injury and the Brazilian Football Confederation announced that he will miss the upcoming round‑of‑16 match against Norway. Paquetá posted a message of faith on social media, saying “Faith… I have lived through this before.”

Coach Carlo Ancelotti will have to adjust his lineup; possible replacements mentioned include Danilo Santos, Ederson, Igor Thiago or others. Paquetá had been a starter in all four group matches and contributed an assist. He was substituted at halftime, supported by Neymar and Endrick, and remained on the bench for the second half. Brazil’s next game is scheduled for Sunday at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, USA.

The injury also highlights Brazil’s broader squad concerns, with winger Raphinha still recovering from a separate thigh injury. The loss of Paquetá reduces Brazil’s creative options as they seek to advance to the quarter‑finals.
