Lucas Pinheiro Braathen discusses career shift to Brazil
Olympic champion Lucas Pinheiro Braathen has reflected on his decision to represent Brazil and his transition to an independent team. After retiring from elite competition in 2023 following a dispute with the Norwegian Ski Federation, the 26-year-old returned to the sport to compete for Brazil, a move that led to him becoming the first Winter Olympic champion for the country and any South American nation.
Braathen stated that forming an independent team has provided him with greater control over his sporting and commercial decisions. Ahead of the men's alpine ski World Cup opening in Sölden, Austria, he noted that while he previously lost sight of his motivations due to competitive pressures, his new autonomy allows him to pursue his goals on his own terms.
Regarding the governance of the sport, Braathen expressed hope for increased transparency and athlete involvement under the new FIS President, Alexander Ospelt. He emphasized the need for athletes to be included in the decision-making processes that affect the foundation of skiing.
